BEAUMONT — The UTSA men’s tennis team stretched its winning streak to seven matches with a 6-1 win at Lamar on Saturday.
The Roadrunners improved to 11-7 overall and remained perfect in league action at 3-0, while the Cardinals fell to 11-8 on the season and 0-3 in conference action.
The Birds opened the match with a 1-0 lead after collecting the doubles point.
The freshman-junior combination of Martin Ayala and Daniel Moreiras put UTSA on top with their 8-3 win against Marton Horvath and Diego Snyder at the No. 3 position. Senior Rodrigo Morgado and sophomore Pedro Zanotelli paired up for the 8-5 victory at the top seed to give the Roadrunners the point.
UTSA then took five of the six singles matches to secure the victory.
Morgado’s straight-sets win (6-4, 7-5) at No. 1 gave the Birds a 2-0 lead and senior Jorge Delgado then extended his winning streak to a half dozen with a 7-6, 6-4 victory at the No. 6 spot. Freshman Tyler Brown fell behind Richard Filkuka 6-2 in the first set but rallied to win the next two frames, 6-1, 6-3, to clinch the match at the No. 3 slot. Ayala and Moreiras also collected wins for the Roadrunners at Nos. 2 and 5, respectively.
UTSA heads to College Station for a noon matchup at No. 12 Texas A&M on Monday.
