Freshman Katie Bragg already owns a pair of school records in her first two months as a Roadrunner.
SAN ANTONIO — Freshman Katie Bragg broke UTSA's four-year-old hammer record and she was one of two throwers to win events at this weekend's outdoor season-opening Trinity Open.
Bragg led a 1-2-3-4 finish by the Roadrunners in the event with her second school record in as many months. The Peachtree City, Ga., native launched the implement 159-11 (48.75m) and that shattered Natasha Ramos' previous standard of 142-8 (43.50) established in 2006. She set the program's indoor weight throw mark at January's Texas Tech Invitational.
Freshman Jaimeé Benett was second in the hammer with her throw of 145-5 (44.33m), while junior Taelor Wilson was just an inch behind for third at 145-4 (44.29m). Freshman Stacia Newton rounded out the quartet with her toss of 121-9 (37.10m).
Newton was UTSA's other gold medalist at the meet, as she was victorious in the discus. The Arlington native launched the platter 134-7 (41.02m) and won the event by eight inches over Tarleton State's Leslie Jordan. Earlier in the day, she placed second in the shot put with her heave of 42-11 ¾ (13.10m).
Freshman Brooke Townzen posted the Birds' other top-three performance after picking up bronze in the javelin (111-11/34.12m).
UTSA will resume outdoor action in three weeks at the Victor Lopez Invitational, which is scheduled for March 26-27 in Houston.
