Martinez qualifies for Texas Hill Country Classic

Senior Shelly Martinez won Sunday's Duramed Futures Tour Qualifier.

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA senior Shelly Martinez won the Duramed Futures Tour Qualifier, which was held at the Dominion Country Club on Sunday, and she earned a spot in next month's Texas Hill Country Classic (April 30-May 2).

“This is huge for Shelly and I'm very excited for her because she has always had aspirations to play professional golf,” head coach Carrie Cole said. “This could not have come at a more perfect time for her, at the conclusion of her senior year. Shelly’s game has been coming along very nicely this season because she has worked extremely hard.”

The Pecos native shot a three-over-par 75 (38-37), which included an eagle on the final hole. Teeing off with a two-shot lead, she reached the 18th green in two shots and then knocked in a 15-foot putt to clinch the victory.

Martinez is the second Roadrunner to qualify for a Futures Tour event. Former UTSA standout Laura Baker made her debut at the same event a year ago.

The tournament was a qualifier that featured 15 of the top amateurs from the San Antonio and Austin areas, including six current Roadrunners and a pair of incoming freshmen.
