ARLINGTON — UT Arlington pounded out 17 hits and took advantage of six errors to sweep a Southland Conference doubleheader against UTSA, 8-0 and 5-3, on Saturday afternoon at Allan Saxe Field.

With the two victories, the Mavericks improved to 17-14 overall and 8-5 in league play, while the Roadrunners fell to 9-21 and 5-9.

In the lid-lifter, Teri Lyles went 3-for-4 with an RBI at the plate and tossed a two-hitter in an 8-0 run-ruling by UTA.  Cara Hulme also went 3-for-4 with an RBI, as the Mavericks plated four runs in the bottom of the first and three more in the third in the win.

Senior Chelsey Chapman had both of the Roadrunners’ hits, while junior Emily Humpal (5-9) allowed four earned runs on nine hits in three innings in the loss.

The Mavericks jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one frame in the nightcap behind a two-run home run from Hulme. UTA tacked on three runs in the third on a two-run blast by Samantha Chumchal and a solo shot by Charne Office.

UTSA put up two runs in the top of the fourth on an RBI single by sophomore Caitlyn Ivy and a bases-loaded walk to junior Emily Blackburn. A run-scoring single by senior Krista Sitka two panels later pulled the Roadrunners to within 5-3

The Runners put the tying run on base in their final at-bat, but Lyles, on in relief, worked out of the jam with a pair of groundouts to secure the twinbill sweep.

Lyles picked up her second win of the day to run her record to 9-8, striking out four and surrendering just one run on five hits in 3.1 innings of relief.

Sophomore Morgan Luksa suffered the loss to fall to 1-5, giving up four earned runs on five hits in six frames. Senior Rudi Cantu led the seven-hit output by going 2-for-4 and she swiped a pair of bases to add to her UTSA career record (51).

Game three is slated for noon Sunday.
