SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA softball team will look to bounce back from a 4-3 loss at North Texas on Thursday night when it travels to the Metroplex for a three-game Southland Conference series against UT Arlington this weekend. First pitch in a Saturday doubleheader is slated for 2 p.m., at Allan Saxe Field, followed by a single game at noon Sunday.
The Roadrunners fell to 9-19 on the season after the heart-breaking loss against the Mean Green. An error in right field in the bottom of the seventh allowed the winning run to score from second base with two outs.
UTSA enters the UTA series at 5-7 in league play, which places them in seventh place in the standings. The Mavericks (15-14) are in fourth place at 6-5, with everyone chasing Stephen F. Austin (7-2).
UTSA leads the all-time series against UTA, 37-25, and has won three consecutive meetings. The Mavericks hold a 15-8 advantage in games played in Arlington and took two of three from the Runners in the last series at Allan Saxe Field on March 8-9, 2008.
Sophomore Caitlyn Ivy continues to lead UTSA in batting average (.388), hits (33), doubles (5), home runs (8), RBIs (23), total bases (64), slugging percentage (.753) and on-base percentage (.465). Sophomore Ashley Kappler is hitting .296 with five doubles, while junior Kristin Kappler is batting .278 with four home runs and 15 RBIs. Sophomore Morgan Luksa’s 3.55 ERA tops the three-arm pitching staff.
Rebecca Collom leads UTA with a .302 batting average and 18 RBIs, while Cara Hulme has slugged a team-best seven home runs, which rank second behind Ivy’s Southland-leading eight long balls. Teri Lyles is the top pitcher with a 7-8 record, 1.82 ERA and 59 strikeouts in 111.2 innings.
