Roadrunners hand St. Mary?s 6-1 loss on Friday

Senior Jorge Delgado's win at No. 6 singles clinched UTSA's fifth win in a row on Friday.

SAN ANTONIO —  The UTSA men’s tennis team dealt St. Mary’s a 6-1 loss on Friday afternoon at the UTSA Tennis Center. The match was added on Thursday evening following the cancellation of this weekend's contests against New Mexico and No. 13 Texas Tech in Lubbock.

The Roadrunners extended their winning streak to five and improved to 9-6 on the season, while the Rattlers dropped to 8-7 overall.

UTSA swept all three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead.

Senior Rodrigo Morgado and sophomore Pedro Zanotelli took care of Vitas Van Dijk and Nestor Moreno by a score of 8-3 at the top spot. The tandem of junior Max Stratmann and freshman Tyler Brown then secured the point with an 8-4 win at the No. 3 spot,. Meanwhile, freshman Martin Ayala and junior Daniel Moreiras completed the sweep with their 8-5 victory at No. 2.

The Roadrunners then made quick work of St. Mary's by winning five of the six singles matches.

Moreiras dispatched of Moreno in a 6-1, 6-0 victory and Brown followed suit with his straight-sets win (6-0, 6-3) at the No. 3 position. Senior Jorge Delgado then clinched the match when he came off the court with a 6-2, 7-5 victory at the No. 6 position.

UTSA hits the road for a pair of matches in Beaumont next weekend. The Roadrunners square off against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Friday, April 2, and play at Lamar the following day.
