OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — Lynn Hickey spent only a short time in Manhattan, but her five seasons as Kansas State's women's basketball coach set her down a career path only a few women in sports have ever traveled.
Hickey, who led the Wildcats to a pair of Big Eight championships and back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances from 1979-84, is one of only two women to have served on the 10-member NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee.
Currently the athletic director at the University of Texas-San Antonio, Hickey spent this past weekend assigned to the first and second rounds of the men's tournament in Oklahoma City where K-State played North Texas and BYU.
"It's been a great opportunity," she said Friday. "You're working with a very good group of people and working with people who have done very well in our profession, so that's been a very good networking opportunity for me. But it is a lot of work, being a five-year commitment, and well worth it."
