Freshman Sarah Adams' win at No. 6 singles gave UTSA a short-lived 2-0 lead on Friday.

SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA women’s tennis dropped its eighth straight match in a 5-2 setback against Maryland-Baltimore County on Friday at the UTSA Tennis Center.

The Roadrunners dropped to 3-12 on the season, while the Retrievers improved to 8-4 overall.

In doubles action, Lorena Valente and Barbara Couto collected an 8-3 win at the No. 3 position against junior Caroline Dedering and sophomore Katie Ottenbreit. The Roadrunners then fought back with a pair of 9-8 wins at the top two seeds to claim the doubles point.

The freshmen tandem of Kavya Menon and Mariel Maffezzolli defeated Carmen Jackman and Emily Mannix at No. 2, while sophomore Micaela Silva and freshman Vivian Carrillo followed suit against Alice Chen and Heidi Danielsson at the top spot.

However, UMBC won five of the six singles matches to collect the victory

After freshman Sarah Adams made quick work of Couto with a pair of 6-1 wins at the No. 6 position to give the Roadrunners a 2-0 advantage, the Retrievers used back-to-back straight-sets wins at the Nos. 1 and 5 slots to make it two-all. Valente then outdueled Dedering, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 3 to put UMBC up one and Jackman then outlasted Menon, 7-5, 1-6, 6-1, at the No. 2 seed, giving Maryland-Baltimore County the match.

UTSA hits the road next weekend for a pair of Southland Conference matches at Northwester State (March 27) and Central Arkansas (March 28).
