Sophomore Summer Batiste finished in second place with a two-under-par 214.
FLORENCE, Ariz. – UTSA captured the second team title in the program's five-year history on Wednesday, as it held off Idaho by one shot at the Northern Migration Invitational. The Roadrunners posted a final round 301 and finished the three-day event with a school-record 895 (298-296-301).
The Birds, who led from start to finish, defeated five teams from the Big 12 (Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Nebraska and Texas Tech) and one Big Ten program (Minnesota).
Sophomore Summer Batiste shot a one-under-par 71 in the final round and finished in second place in the individual standings. The Spring native posted a three-day scorecard of 214 (73-70-71), which was two-under-par. Idaho’s Kayla Motellaro picked up the individual medal with a 211 (68-70-73) and she defeated Batiste by three strokes.
“I'm so proud of this team,” second-year head coach Carrie Cole said. “They were confident and calm from the start. I'm also proud of Summer’s play. Second place in this field is great. This truly was a team win, as each individual played a part in this victory.”
Meanwhile, senior Shelly Martinez recorded her first top-five outing of the spring. The Pecos native wrapped up the event tied for fifth place with three-day tally of 222 (79-68-75).
The Roadrunners inaugural team championship came at last spring's Stripes Islanders Classic.
UTSA returns to action on April 5-6 at the Houston Baptist Intercollegiate.
