Lions complete weekend sweep of Roadrunners

· Box score

Senior Ryan Rummel went 3-for-5 with his first two home runs of the season on Sunday afternoon.

HAMMOND, La. — No. 26 Southeastern Louisiana exploded for seven runs in the first, added two more an inning later and cruised to its 15th win in 16 games this season with a 15-8 victory against UTSA on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field.

The Lions (15-1, 3-0 SLC) saw their first 10 hitters of the game reach base by either hit or walk and Roadrunners junior left-handed starter D.D. Towler was chased from the game after facing just seven hitters. SLU then greeted righty Jason Walls with three consecutive singles and it had a 7-0 lead before an out was recorded.

Southeastern added a pair one inning later on Brock Hebert's two-run single and had a nine-run advantage that proved too much to overcome for UTSA (7-7, 0-3 SLC).

Hebert went 3-for-3 with a double and four RBIs to lead the Lions at the plate, while leadoff hitter Cass Hargis added three hits. All nine SLU starters on offense reached base and crossed the plate at least once.

Southeastern starter Tanner Lorenz (2-0) was the beneficiary of the 15-run, 13-hit offensive attack. The right-hander surrendered four runs on a half dozen hits in his five-plus innings.
Senior Ryan Rummel finished up a productive series with a 3-for-5 performance that included his first two long balls of the year and three RBIs. It was the first two-homer contest of his career and he finished the weekend with a .500 batting average (7-for-14) to go along with a double, two bombs and four RBIs. Meanwhile, junior Ryan Hutson left the park for the second time this weekend and for the team-leading fourth time this spring.

Towler (1-2) was saddled with the loss after coughing up seven runs on three hits and four walks.

The Roadrunners open a five-game home stand on Tuesday night when they host Iowa (4-9) in the opener of a two-game series at Wolff Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
