Sophomore Laura Little had two hits on Saturday afternoon.

HUNTSVILLE – Junior Kristin Kappler and sophomore Laura Little collected two hits each, but Sam Houston State swept a doubleheader from UTSA, 2-1 and 5-4, on Saturday afternoon at the Bearkat Softball Complex.

With the sweep, the Bearkats improved to 8-14 overall and 2-6 in Southland Conference play, while the Roadrunners fell to 7-16 and 3-5.

Kappler went 2-for-2 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored in the nightcap, a 5-4 setback, while Little was 1-for-1 with a two-bagger and a run in the 2-1 loss in the lid-lifter. Senior Rudi Cantu and sophomore Caitlyn Ivy also registered two hits apiece in the twinbill.

Cantu was 2-for-4 with an RBI in game one, but Amy Brown was 3-for-3, including the walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh to help lift the Bearkats to their first league victory of the year.

Sam Houston took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a leadoff home run by Shelbi Tucker.

UTSA knotted the score in the top of the fifth, as Little doubled, moved to third on a single by senior Chelsey Chapman and scored when a ground ball off the bat of Cantu was mishandled by the shortstop.

Tiffani Woodrum got things going for Sam Houston in the seventh with a leadoff base hit. She stole second and advanced to third on a base knock by Hailey Wigington. Brown then came through in the clutch with her one-out base hit to end the game.

Morgan Mikulin worked two scoreless innings in relief of Tomi Garrison, who allowed one run on four hits in five frames, to earn the win and run her record to 4-6 on the season.  Junior Emily Humpal (4-6) picked up the loss in relief.

Kappler’s two-hit outing was not enough to overcome a 5-0 deficit in game two.

The Bearkats jumped out to a big lead in their first at-bat, getting two-run doubles from Mikulin and Mandy Gegen in the five-run frame.

UTSA climbed back into the game with two runs in the fourth. Ivy and Kappler had back-to-back singles to start the panel and both scored when a ball off the bat of freshman Samantha Beeson was misplayed.

The Roadrunners cut the Sam Houston lead down to one run two innings later. Ivy drew a leadoff walk and came home on an RBI double by Kappler to make it 5-3. Little then reached on an error on the infield that allowed Kappler to move to third base. A passed ball then plated the fourth run of the game for UTSA.

Mikulin (5-6) picked up the win in the circle, striking out six and surrendering two earned runs on five hits in a complete game. She also went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs at the plate to help her own cause.

Humpal (4-7) allowed four earned runs in two-thirds of an inning in the loss. Sophomore Morgan Luksa scattered six hits in 5.1 frames of relief and also was 1-for-3 at the plate.

Sunday's finale is slated for 1 p.m.
