Junior Max Stratmann's straight-sets win at No. 6 singles helped give UTSA a come-from-behind 4-3 win on Tuesday.
SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA men’s tennis team rallied from a 3-1 deficit to score a dramatic 4-3 comeback win against Saint Louis on Tuesday at the UTSA Tennis Center.
The Roadrunners, who snapped a two-match losing streak, improved to 5-6 on the season, while the Billikens dropped 5-2.
Saint Louis raced out to a 3-0 lead in singles play when James McArthur (7-6, 6-2), Ken Nordheim (6-2, 6-1) and Jake Hendrie (3-6, 6-3, 7-5) each collected wins at the top three slots.
Junior Daniel Moreiras got the Birds on the board with his 6-4, 7-5 win against Chri Eriksson at the No. 4 position. Senior Jorge Delgado then registered a 6-2, 6-3 victory versus P.J. Hendrie at No. 6 to draw UTSA within one and junior Max Stratmann tied the match at three with his straight-sets triumph (6-4, 7-6) at the No. 5 spot.
The decision came down to the doubles point and what a finish those three contests produced.
FreshmanHugo Guanais and Moreiras gave the Roadrunners the advantage with their 8-6 win againstDrew Feder and Dave Welkener at the No. 3 slot.
Saint Louis came storming back when Jake Hendrie and McArthur defeated Ayala and senior Rodrigo Morgado 9-8 at the top seed, leaving the match to be decided at the No. 2 position.
Freshman Tyler Brownand Stratmann were up to the challenge, as the pair posted a 9-8 triumph against Erikssonand Nordheim to secure the point and the victory for the Birds.
UTSA begins a nine-match road trip on Sunday, March 14, at New Orleans.
