SAN MARCOS — Sophomore Whitney York recorded her first career double-double with a team-high 17 points and personal-best 10 rebounds to lead UTSA past I-35 rival Texas State, 58-55, on Wednesday night at Strahan Coliseum.

The Roadrunners improved to 16-12 on the season and 10-5 in conference play, while the Bobcats dropped to 7-19 overall and 3-12 in league action.

York’s 17-point outing was her 21st double-digit game of the season. Junior Amber Gregg posted her third straight double-figures game with 13 points on the strength of three 3-pointers and junior Ashleigh Franklin added nine on the night

Diamond Ford held game-high honors with 18 points for the Bobcats, while Amie Hilburn chipped in with a dozen.

UTSA netted the first four points to start the second half, but Texas State responded with eight unanswered for its first lead of the game at 31-30 with 16:06 to go. York came back with a pair of free throws of her own that gave the Roadrunners a four-point margin (37-33) with 13:33 showing on the clock.

Ford converted on a three-point play and Victoria Davis made good on two freebies to put the Bobcats up 51-48 with 5:15 left.

The combination of York and Gregg sparked an 8-0 run that stretched over two minutes that gave the Runners the 56-51 lead for good and would not look back.

UTSA jumped to a 9-2 lead within the first four minutes of play in the first half. Davis knocked down a 3-pointer from the right corner to make it an 11-9 Roadrunners lead past the midway point of the frame.

A York layup and Gregg three-ball upped the Runners advantage to seven (16-9) at the 9-minute mark. Gregg’s second 3-pointer of the stanza gave UTSA its largest lead of the game at 25-17, but Texas State’s Hilburn cashed in on back-to-back treys to make it a 26-23 halftime score.

UTSA ends its regular season against Stephen F. Austin at the Convocation Center at 4 p.m. on Saturday (please note time change). Senior Valencia Cottom will be honored prior to tip-off.
