Omar Johnson named Southland Conference Player of the Week

Senior Omar Johnson picked up UTSA's second consecutive Southland Player of the Week award on Monday.

FRISCO — UTSA senior guard Omar Johnson was named Southland Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday

Johnson averaged 19 points, 7.5 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game to help UTSA to victories against Northwestern State and Lamar last week, extending the Roadrunners’ winning streak to five games in the process. The Philadelphia, Pa., native turned in a career night in the 88-74 victory against Northwestern State on Wednesday, recording 21 points and nine assists and going 10-for-10 from the free-throw line for the second time in his career to tie the school record shared by four others. In Saturday’s 76-74 win at Lamar, Johnson scored 17 points behind a 6-for-9 night shooting and added a game-high eight rebounds, six assists and two steals. Johnson shot 10-for-18 (55.6 percent) from the field, including 4-of-8 from downtown, and made 14-of-17 from the charity stripe in the two victories.

It marks the first Southland weekly honor for Johnson, an honorable mention all-conference selection last season and a preseason second-team honoree this year, and the second consecutive accolade for UTSA, as junior guard Devin Gibson garnered Player of the Week honors last Monday.

Honorable mention this week goes to Sam Houston State guard Corey Allmond, Texas State guard J.B. Conley and Stephen F. Austin guard/forward Eddie Williams. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland men’s basketball sports information directors.

Each school’s SID nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own player.

The Roadrunners host Texas State at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
