SAN ANTONIO – After starting the season with a pair of non-conference wins last weekend, the UTSA men’s tennis team returns to action on Saturday when it opens Southland Conference play against Texas Pan American at the UTSA Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
“I felt good about how we played last weekend, especially after our match against Laredo Community College,” head coach Dr. Oliver Trittenwein said. “Our guys really played well and brought home the wins.”
UTSA dropped last season’s meeting 4-2 in Edinburg and the team is hungry for some redemption.
“Last season’s match was really disappointing for us,” Trittenwein said. “One of our players couldn’t make the trip down there and it really hurt our overall lineup. I also felt that we didn’t compete the way I knew we could. I know the guys are out for some payback this season. The guys that were there last year really feel like they have something to prove this season, so I think it should be a good match.”
The Roadrunners opened their season at home last weekend with a pair of non-conference victories.
UTSA defeated Prairie View A&M, 7-0, on Saturday and capped off the weekend with a 6-1 victory against Laredo Community College the following day.
“Our two opening matches were important for us,” Trittenwein said. “It gave our freshmen the experience of playing for the team and not just individual tournaments. It allowed our doubles pairings to get a little more familiar with each other and they got a couple of wins, which should help their confidence. Most of all, though, the two matches gave them some actual court time against outside opponents. It allowed us to get mentally and physically prepared to enter our conference season. Our team doesn’t want to go down the same road as last year with UTPA.”
The Roadrunners will wrap up their two-match home stand at 1 p.m. on Sunday against St. Edward’s.
Admission to all UTSA home tennis matches is free.
