HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston State handed the UTSA women’s tennis team a 5-2 loss in the Southland Conference opener for both teams on Saturday.

The Roadrunners fell to 3-5 on the season, while the Bearkats improved to 2-5.

Sam Houston State jumped to 1-0 lead after winning all three doubles matches.

In singles action, sophomore Katie Ottenbreit won her match via forfeit at the No. 6 position to tie the match at one. Nadia Dubyanskaya then gave the Bearkats a 2-1 advantage with her 6-3, 6-1 win against freshman Vivian Carrillo at No. 4. Giorgia Pozzan made it 3-1 when she came off the court with a straight-sets victory (7-6, 6-1) versus sophomore Micaela Silva at the top spot. The Roadrunners made things interesting when freshman Kavya Menon cut the deficit 3-2 after a 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 triumph over Sheridan Currie at the No. 3 slot. However, Tatyana Postnikova clinched the match at No. 2.

UTSA returns to action on Sunday morning at Stephen F. Austin. First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m.
