Devin Gibson
FRISCO —
UTSA junior Devin Gibson has been named Southland Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Gibson turned in arguably his best week of the season to help UTSA knock off the top two teams in the West Division last week. The junior from Houston averaged 20.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.0 steals. He shot 64.3 percent from the field, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range, and 79.2 percent from the free-throw line.
Gibson posted 18 points, five assists and three steals in the 57-56 win at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi last Wednesday, the program’s first victory in Corpus Christi. Gibson followed that with 22 points behind 4-for-5 shooting and a 13-for-18 night at the charity stripe to help the Roadrunners hand Sam Houston State its first conference loss with a 91-90 overtime win on Saturday.
Gibson is averaging 13.4 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 2.1 steals per game this season.
Honorable mention this week goes to Northwestern State forward Will Pratt, UT Arlington guard Marquez Haynes, Southeastern Louisiana center Patrick Sullivan and Lamar forward Justin Nabors. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland men’s basketball sports information directors.
Each school’s SID nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own player.
The Roadrunners have won three straight and four of their last five games and will host Northwestern State at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
