HOUSTON – Rachel Zabriskie and Lauren Kennewell combined to throw a one-hitter, as Iowa State downed UTSA, 9-0, in five innings on the final day of the Marriott Houston Invitational held Sunday at Cougar Stadium.
Zabriskie tossed four innings of no-hit ball, striking out seven against zero walks, while Kennewell allowed one hit in the fifth frame to help the Cyclones improve to 6-5 on the season.
Senior Krista Sitka broke up the no-hit bid with a one-out single to center field, but Kennewell ended the game with a strike out and ground out to drop the Roadrunners to 2-8.
Iowa State plated three runs in three of the five innings, beginning in the second. Alex Johnson led off with a home run to center field and Amanda Bradberry and Carrie Monroe scored unearned runs later in the panel on an RBI double by Monroe and a run-scoring single by Kelsey Kidwell.
A two-run homer by Sydni Jones highlighted a three-run third for the Cyclones and Courtney Ray slugged a two-run shot in the fifth to help provide the final margin.
Sophomore Morgan Luksa (1-2) was tagged with the loss, as she surrendered three earned runs on six hits in 2.1 frames.
The Roadrunners travel to Lubbock for a two-game series at Texas Tech that begins at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
