Freshman Kavya Menon won her doubles and singles matches on Sunday.
SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA women’s tennis team defeated St. Edwards, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at the UTSA Tennis Center.
The Roadrunners (3-4) jumped out to the early 1-0 lead by taking the doubles point to start the match.
After junior Caroline Dedering and freshman Mariel Maffezzolli lost their No. 2 contest, 8-0, to Elizabeth Jacobi and Mary Bain, sophomore Katie Ottenbreit and freshman Kavya Menon got the Birds on the board when they knocked out Heather Brien and Caryn McGraw, 8-3, at No. 3. Sophomore Michaela Silva and freshman Vivian Carillo rallied back from a 6-3 deficit at No. 1 to win their match, 8-6, and cllinch the point for UTSA.
In singles action, freshman Nicci Yvanovich made quick work of her No. 6 opponent, defeating McGraw, 6-0, 6-1, to give UTSA the 2-0 lead. Shortly after, Menon knocked off Jacobi at No. 3 by the same score, giving the Roadrunners a commanding 3-0 lead. Silva sealed the match for UTSA when she took out Paige Rachel in a second-set tiebreak, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7).
UTSA will be on the road next weekend with a pair of matches to open up the Southland Conference season.
The Birds take on Sam Houston State at 11 a.m. on Saturday and then will travel north to face Stephen F. Austin at 11 a.m. the following morning.
