Abilene Christian pounces on Roadrunners, 7-0

SAN ANTONIO —  The UTSA women’s tennis team fell to 2-4 on the season after dropping a 7-0 decision to Abilene Christian in its home opener on Saturday.

The Wildcats (5-1) pounced on the Roadrunners early on, sweeping the doubles competition for the quick 1-0 lead.

Sophomore Katie Ottenbreit and freshman Kavya Menon dropped their No. 3 contest, 8-2, to Hannah Kelley and Lauren White. ACU sealed the doubles point when Jaclyn Walker and Dina Pavlin took out sophomore Michaela Silva and freshman Vivian Carrillo at No. 1, 8-2.

In singles action, freshman Mariel Maffezzolli lost her No. 3 match with Pavlin, 6-0, 6-0, while Silva faced Walker at No. 1, falling 6-2, 6-1. The Wildcats took the match when Menon dropped her No. 4 tilt with Cassie Carver, 6-1, 6-2, giving them the 4-0 win. ACU went on to take the final three matches en route to the shutout.

UTSA will be back in action at 11 a.m. on Sunday when they host St. Edwards. Admission to all matches at the UTSA Tennis Center is free.
