DENTON —  UTSA women’s tennis team lost its season opener to North Texas on Sunday in a tough 7-0 decision. The match was moved indoors to the Las Colinas Country Club due to inclement weather in the Dallas metroplex.

The morning did not start out well for the Roadrunners (0-1) as the Mean Green (2-1) grabbed the doubles point in a sweep.

Sophomore Micaela Silva and freshman Vivian Carrillo dropped the No. 1 doubles match to Irina Paraschiv and Amy Joubert, 8-1, while freshman Kavya Menon and sophomore Katie Ottenbreit fell 8-2 to Barbora Vykydalova and Catalina Cruz. Team co-captain Caroline Dedering teamed with Mariel Maffezzolli in an 8-6 effort against Madura Ranganathan and Narine Kazarova.

The afternoon did not look up for UTSA as North Texas led the rest of the match and won all singles games.

Of the six singles games, team co-captain Micaela Silva dropped a tough upset to Paraschiv (6-0, 6-2) at the No. 1 spot as the Runners faced losses in each game. Ottenbreit took Kazarova into a tie breaker at the No. 6 spot, but the sophomore was outlasted and lost in a 2-6, 6-4, 10-7 decision.

The Runners will return to action next weekend as the team travels to Colorado Springs, Colo., to face four different teams. UTSA plays both Montana State first at 9 a.m. and UMKC at 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 5.
