Williams adds another record to resume at Texas Tech Invitational

· Final results

Senior Teddy Williams picked up the fifth school record of his illustrious career on Saturday.

LUBBOCK — Another meet, another record-breaking performance for UTSA two-time All-American Teddy Williams. The senior from Tyler etched yet another line to his already-impressive resume at Saturday's Texas Tech Invitational.

Williams peeled off an NCAA provisional and program-record 6.23 in winning the meet's 55-meter dash title. He easily defeated North Texas' Keyth Talley by seven-one-thousandths of a second in the first of two final sections. The time, which converts to a 6.71 60m standard (currently 12th NCAA), eclipsed Chris Dean's seven-year-old mark of 6.35, which was established at the 2003 Red Raider Invitational. Williams stopped the clock in 6.35 in the first of nine preliminary heats earlier in the day to tie Dean's standard and he headed to the final with the second-fastest performance.

It is Williams' second UTSA indoor record and fifth overall when coupled with the program's outdoor ledger. He also owns the Southland Conference standard in the 60m (6.59) along with school marks in the 100m (9.90w), 200m (20.60w) and 400m relay (39.84) outdoors.

He just missed another record on Friday night when he raced to a 21.56 in the deuce. Williams, who finished with the night's sixth-best time, was a mere three ticks away from Cedric Harris' standard of 21.53, which was set four years ago at the Boise State Invitational. That mark stands second on the program's all-time performer chart.

Meanwhile, freshman Richard Garrett Jr. won his second consecutive shot put crown on Saturday. The Garland native tossed the implement 56-6 ½/17.23m to edge Benjamin Harrison (unattached) by just an inch-and-a-quarter. He also posted a second-place finish in the weight throw B flight on Friday night with his personal-record measurement of 49-2 ¼/14.99m.

Junior Devon Bond continued his strong start to the season with his runner-up performance in the triple jump on Saturday. The Trenton, N.J., native skipped to a 50-6 ¼/15.41m. He currently ranks eighth in the nation with the school-record 50-10 ¾/15.51m effort he posted last Friday in his UTSA debut.

Junior Brandon Chiuminetta led three Roadrunners that finished in the top five in 1,000 meters on Friday with his 2:30.47 clocking that was good for a silver medal. Senior Corey Vargas was third (2:31.06) and sophomore Albert Cardenas finished fifth (2:32.71).

The Roadrunners are back in action next weekend at the Houston Opener. The two-day meet gets underway on Friday, Jan. 29, at Bill Yeoman Field House.
