Freshman Katie Bragg was the second Roadrunner in as many weeks to set a new program record.
LUBBOCK —Freshman Katie Bragg shattered the school record in the weight throw to highlightaction for the UTSA women’s track and field team at the Texas TechInvitational held Friday-Saturday at the Athletic Training Center.
Competing in just her second collegiate meet, thePeachtree City, Ga., native hurled the 20-pound implement out to ameasure of 17.13 meters (56-2 ½) to better Natasha Ramos’ former schoolstandard of 15.87m. Her performance earned her fourth place in thefield of nine throwers won by Kelly Closse of South Plains JC(18.43m/60-5 ¾).
The Roadrunners registered 11 top-five finishes inthe non-scored meet, including a “B” section victory by freshmanJessica Edwards in the long jump. The Sugar Land native leaped to a17-10 ¾ measure for top honors.
UTSA also received a pair of runner-up showings by a pair of freshmen in the field events.
Eboni Johnson skipped to the No. 2 spot on theschool’s all-timer triple jump performers list with a 39-0 ½ mark totake second behind Jessica Blair of Abilene Christian (39-3). Fellowfirst-year performer Zaquita McClanahan posted a 43-5 ¼ measure in the“B” section of the shot put. Freshman Stacia Newton was right behindher in third with a 42-5 ½ effort.
Freshman Brooke Townzen matched her school-recordpole vault performance from last weekend in Houston, clearing 11-1 ¾ tofinish in a tie for third place.
In other action, senior Dana Mecke finished fourth inthe mile with a 4:59.64 clocking, while senior Pernilla Savestrand wasclose behind in sixth (5:04.73). Junior Aimee Jonas cleared 5-2 ½ toplace fourth in the high jump, while junior Jayde James took fifth inthe 1,000m (3:07.30). Junior Shavonne Armbrister was fifth in the 400min 57.46 and senior Jessica Jones cruised to a fifth-place time of 8.09in the 55m hurdles.
The Roadrunners return to action next Friday, Jan. 22, when they travel to the Houston Opener at Bill Yeoman Field House.
