THIBODAUX, La. — Freshman Judy Jones led four Roadrunners in double figures with a team-high 15 points and the UTSA women’s basketball team handed Nicholls a 58-49 setback in Southland Conference action Wednesday night at Stopher Gym.
The Roadrunners improved to 8-7 on the season and 2-0 in league play, while the Colonels dropped to 3-11 overall and 0-2 conference play.
Jones, who hails from Monroe, La., posted her third straight double figures game with 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the floor. Junior Amber Gregg and sophomore Whitney York chipped in with 11, while junior Ashleigh Franklin added 10 points on the night. Franklin and Jones also held game-high honors with eight rebounds.
A tale of two halves for UTSA’s offense, as the Runners registered 25.8 percent shooting from the floor in the first half, but bettered that in the final frame making 11-of-23 for 47.8 percent.
Ricshanda Bickman paced Nicholls’ offense with a game-high 25 points, while Alisha Allen chipped in with 10.
UTSA opened the second half with a 12-4 run for its largest lead of the game at 39-29 within the first four minutes of the frame and never look back. Nicholls then responded with a 9-2 spurt to cut the Roadrunners deficit to 41-38 with 11:45 remaining and it would the closet the Colonels would get for the rest of the game.
The Roadrunners pushed their lead to eight points (53-45) with the help of a 12-5 run that ran over seven minutes. Bickman was good on two freebies that made it a six-point game with 3:52 to play. UTSA was clutch from the charity stripe making 5-of-6 to seal the nine-point win
After taking a 5-2 lead on Franklin’s three-ball from the left corner with 16:42 to go in the first half. Bickman then sparked a 9-0 run scoring seven points to reclaim the 11-5 lead over the next two minutes. Gregg and freshman Jermini Malone connected on back-to-back 3-pointers to make it an 11-11 ballgame at the 13-minute mark.
The Roadrunners and the Colonels traded baskets back and forth over the final nine minutes of the frame with neither team holding more than a one-point lead. Gregg’s two free throws with less than a minute left gave the Runners a 27-25 lead at the half.
Both teams combined for a total of 11 lead changes and six ties in the first 20 minutes of the game.
UTSA returns home to face West Divisional foe UT Arlington on Saturday, Jan. 16, at the Convocation Center. Tip off is schedule for 2 p.m.
