HOUSTON — Rice used a balanced offensive attack to collect its first win ever against the UTSA women’s basketball team with a 70-56 victory Monday night at Tudor Fieldhouse.
The Roadrunners end their non-conference schedule with a 6-7 record, while the Owls improved to 6-7 overall.
Freshman Judy Jones collected her second career double-double with 15 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Junior Ashleigh Franklin and sophomore Whitney York added 13 points apiece. Franklin, who collected Southland Conference Player of the Week honors, also hauled in nine rebounds.
UTSA struggled from the floor connecting on 22-of-74 for 29.7 percent and were iced cold from downtown making two on 11 tries (18.2 percent).
D’Frantz Smart held game-high honors with 18 points and collected 11 rebounds to go along with seven assists. Megan Elliott added 15, while Jackie Stanley and Tara Watts chipped in with 13 and 10, respectively.
York opened with a lay up to trim the lead to 33-28 within the first six seconds of the second half and would be the closest UTSA would get for the rest of the game. Rice responded with nine unanswered points to build its advantage to double digits (42-28) over the next two minutes.
A Jones jumper with 14:55 remaining made it a 45-36 game, but the Owls scored 16 of the next 21 points over a six minute span to make it a 61-41.
A mini run by the Roadrunners with five minutes and change left cut the deficit to 10 (63-53), but Rice connected on free throws late in the contest to seal the win.
Stanley made good on a pair of free throws to make the score in favor for Rice 13-4 with 12:20 to go in the first half. UTSA pulled within five of the Owls’ lead on Jones’ driving lay up at the 7-minute mark. Elliott highlighted an 8-2 run with four points that gave Rice its 33-22 lead with 1:35 left.
Jones netted the last four points for the Roadrunners to make it a seven-point game (33-26) at the half.
