SAN ANTONIO — Junior Ashleigh Franklin and sophomore Whitney York combined for 56 points, but Louisiana Tech’s Shanavia Dowdell held game-high honors with 30 points and grabbed 18 rebounds to lead the Lady Techsters past the Roadrunners 82-72 in the final day of the UTSA New Year’s Classic Wednesday night at the Convocation Center.
The Roadrunners saw their record dropped to 6-6 on the season, while Louisiana Tech improved to 8-3 overall.
Franklin, who was named to the UTSA New Year’s Classic All-Tournament Team, scored 26 of her career-high 29 points in the second half. The Dallas native posted 11 of her 12 field goals in the final frame. York registered a career-best 27 points, including 19 in the first half. The Bryan native also set personnel bests in free throws made and attempts going 13-of-20 on the night.
The Roadrunners saw their struggles from downtown going 1-for-13, including 0-for-7 in the second half.
Dowdell, who collected all-tournament honors, was 13-of-17 from the floor and had 14 of her 18 boards come on the defensive end. Whitney Jones also joined Dowdell on the all-tournament team contributed 11 on the night.
Franklin and junior Amber Gregg converted on a pair of lay ups to trim Louisiana Tech’s lead to four (39-35) within the first minute of the second half. The Lady Techsters put together a 15-5 run that spanned over the next the eight minutes to take 54-40 advantage.
UTSA rallied late in the game with a 7-0 run to make it a 75-71 contest with 1:29 showing on the clock. Franklin highlighted the spurt with four of the seven points. Louisiana Tech iced it from the charity stripe going 5-of-6 to clinch the win.
First half action saw 10 lead changes and six ties with neither team holding more than a one-point lead in the first 10 minutes of the first half. York opened the contest scoring 14 of the Roadrunners first 16 points.
The Lady Techsters took a 30-23 lead with the help of 7-0 run with under six minutes to play in the frame and would not look back. A York pull up jumper cut the deficit to five, but back-to-back buckets by Louisiana Tech increased its advantage to nine (34-25) with four minutes to left in the stanza.
UTSA opens the 2010 year on the road in its final non-conference game at Rice on Jan. 4, at 7 p.m.
