NATCHITCOHES, La. — The fifth-seeded UTSA soccer team fell in double overtime, 3-2, against No. 4 seed Sam Houston State in first-round action of the 2009 Southland Conference Soccer Tournament on Thursday night.
The Roadrunners saw their season end at 9-10-2 overall, while the Bearkats improved to 9-9-2 on the year and advanced to Friday's second semifinal against Southland Regular Season Champion Texas State.
Shelby Grissett’s netted the game-winning goal with less than 30 seconds to go in the second overtime to give Sam Houston State the victory.
The Roadrunners had a chance to win earlier, but junior Allison Dillon’s shot sailed high with less than three minutes to go.
UTSA took a 2-1 lead when junior Jenna Pawelek sent the ball to Dillon, who crossed it sophomore Taylor Padia and she put it past the diving Sam Houston State goalkeeper at the 54-minute mark of the second half.
The Bearkats tied the match when Kate Wesneski headed the ball off the corner kick from Paige Rodriguez with less than 15 seconds remaining in the match.
Sam Houston State grabbed the early lead 1-0 when Haley Rohlmeier knocked it in from six yards out on the left side of the goal within the opening minute of play.
UTSA evened the match at one when Dillon netted her sixth goal of the season at the 17-miunute mark of the first half. Freshman Clare Jakubowski and sophomore Taylor Padia were credited with assists on the play.
