CHARLESTON, S.C. — Junior Amber Gregg’s season-high 20 points was not enough as the UTSA women’s basketball team dropped a 62-45 decision at College of Charleston Saturday afternoon on the final day of the Lowcountry Classic.
Gregg matched her career-high of six 3-pointers, while going 7-for-14 overall from the floor. Freshman Judy Jones joined Gregg in double figures with 13 points to go along with eight rebounds, while junior Ashleigh Franklin hauled in a team-high nine boards.
UTSA struggled from the floor shooting 25.4 percent (17-for-67) and 38.5 percent from the charity stripe (5-for-13).
College of Charleston held a 51-39 rebound advantage, which led to 12 second points and 34 points in the paint.
Gregg’s knocked down a pair of three balls to start the second half and trimmed the lead 35-32 with 17:25 to go. College of Charleston then pulled away with the help of an 11-2 run over the next five minutes for the 46-34 cushion.
York’s jumper with 8:07 remaining cut the Cougars deficit to 10 (48-38), but CofC closed out the game with a 14-7 run for the 62-45 win.
College of Charleston opened the game with a 13-5 run. Deidra Jones and NeShonda McLaurin combined for seven of the 13 points scored by the Cougars. After a UTSA timeout, the Roadrunners netted the next six points to cut the deficit to 13-11 with 10:02 to go in the first half.
A Jones turnaround jumper from the right side pushed CofC’s lead to five points (20-15) with under six minutes to play in the stanza. A layup by York and back-to-back 3-pointers by Gregg capped off 8-0 spurt that gave the Runners a 22-21 advantage at the 4-minute mark.
Tonia Gerty connected on a three ball from the left corner to give the Cougar the 29-26 lead at the half.
Jones led the Cougars with game-highs 23 points and 19 rebounds, Gerty and Jade Hughes added 14 and 11 points, respectively.
UTSA returns to San Antonio for its annual UTSA Thanksgiving Classic on Nov. 27 against Navy at 7 p.m. and then versus Jacksonville State the following day.
