Franklin?s double-double leads UTSA past Schreiner, 86-32

Junior Ashleigh Franklin posted her second consecutive double-double to open the season.

SAN ANTONIO — Junior Ashleigh Franklin collected her second consecutive double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds to lead the UTSA women’s basketball team to an easy 86-32 win against Schreiner Sunday afternoon at the Convocation Center.

The Roadrunners improved to 1-1 on the season, while the Mountaineers dropped to 0-1 on the year. The 54-point victory margin tied for third all-time in school history.

Freshman Judy Jones led UTSA with a career-high 20 points and nine rebounds, while sophomores Cierra Martin and Whitney York and freshman Jermini Malone contributed nine points apiece. Meawhile, junior Kameisha Johnson dished out a career-high six assists to go along with eight points.

Sophomore Shantel Nwanguma hauled in a career-best 10 rebounds, as the Roadrunners held a 51-29 advantage off the glass.

UTSA set several defensive records as it held Schreiner to the lowest field goal percentage in game at 14.0 percent on 7-for-50 shooting from the floor and the seven field goals also were the fewest in a contest.

UTSA started of the second half on 9-4 run to push its lead to 59-20 at the 16-minute mark. A jumper by Kira Chester pulled the Mountaineers within 39 points (66-27) with 8:06 remaining.

The Roadrunners ended the game with a 20-5 spurt en route to the 54-point victory.

Schreiner grabbed the 1-0 lead on a free throw by Jasmine Copeland with 18:46 to go in the first half. UTSA’s offense then netted the next 17 consecutive points that span over six minutes. Franklin’s eight points highlighted the Roadrunners spurt.

Hannah Burleson’s 3-pointer was the lone field goal netted by the Mountaineers for the entire half, which tied for fewest made in a frame.

The Mountaineers used a 9-5 run to cut lead to 22-10 at the 10-minute mark of the half. Burleson led the way with four of the nine points score all coming from the free throw line.

The Roadrunners then closed out the stanza on a 28-6 run for the 50-16 lead.

UTSA hits the road for a pair of games in Charleston, S.C., at the Lowcountry Classic against Charleston Southern on Nov. 20 and then at College of Charleston the following day.
