Roadrunners sweep Islanders for first league victory

CORPUS CHRISTI — UTSA used a balanced effort along both rows and it picked up its first Southland Conference victory of the season with a 25-14, 25-23, 25-16 victory at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday afternoon.

The Roadrunners, who hit .296 (second-best percentage of season), closed out the first set with an 11-3 run to go in front. The Birds rallied late in the following frame by scoring four of the final five points and they took a 2-0 advantage into intermission.

UTSA used a 13-5 run to break open the third set and it finished off the sweep by hitting .394 (16 kills/3 errors/33 attacks) in the final stanza. The victory ran the Roadrunners' record to a perfect 11-0 in the all-time series with the Islanders.

Outside hitter Whitney Walls led the Roadrunners with eight kills, while fellow outside hitters Elise Huskey and Kendra Rowland and middle hitter Briana Mason chipped in with seven apiece.

Meanwhile, Rowland led UTSA in the back row with a match-high 14 digs and libero Kelsey Jewasko also was in double figures with 10. Mason controlled the net defensively with her match-leading five blocks (2 solo/3 assists) and Huskey added a three (1/2).

Jessica Korda led A&M-Corpus Christi with 11 winners.

UTSA returns to action on Thursday, Oct. 8, when it hosts Lamar (8-7, 3-1 SLC) in a 6:30 match at the Convocation Center.
