SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision against Southland Conference foe Sam Houston State Friday night at the UTSA Recreational Complex.
The Roadrunners saw their record fall to 9-8-1 overall and 4-2-1 in league play, while the Bearkats improved to 7-7-2 on the season and 4-2 in conference action.
Junior Allison Dillon had a clear shot at goal, but Sam Houston State’s goalkeeper Jenny Pence stopped it from going in the net at the 4-minute mark of the first half.
Sam Houston State jumped to the 1-0 lead off the foot of Shelby Grissett when she dribbled past the Roadrunners defense and beat freshman goalie Dacia Webb at the 5-minute mark of the frame.
Senior Kim Gonzales could have tied the match in the stanza, however; the San Antonio native’s shot attempt hit the crossbar with 15:01 to go.
The Bearkats pushed the lead 2-0 when Kate Wesneski headed the ball into the net off a corner from the left side at the 18-minute mark.
UTSA could not capitalize on three tries in the second half, including back-to-back attempts at the 53-minute mark. Dillon’s shot attempt was punched by Pence into the air giving junior Chelsea Zimmerman a chance to knock it in, but Pence was there for the save.
Freshman Kara Hoffman had an opportunity to put the Birds on the board, but was unlucky as her shot hit the post with less than 10 minutes to play.
UTSA return to action on Sunday afternoon in its regular-season home finale against Stephen F. Austin at 1 p.m.
