Ashley Benes has made an immediate impact upon the UTSA cross country program in her first season. The freshman from Austin's Bowie High School has finished in the Roadrunners’ top five at four different meets, highlighted by a third-place finish at the Trinity Opener and a fourth-place effort at the Ricardo Romo/Six Flags Fiesta Texas Classic. With this weekend off in preparation for the Southland Conference Championships on Oct. 31, Benes took time out of her schedule to talk with goUTSA.com about her decision to attend UTSA, the differences between high school and college and what she likes to do in her spare time.
What made you choose UTSA?
“I visited UTSA last October. The coaches and the girls were very welcoming. Right away it felt like a home away from home. The girls were not concerned about race times or who is a top runner, but more about comfort and getting along as teammates. The team atmosphere was very bonding. I knew this was the place for me. After my visit, I still had other options, but UTSA was always in my heart. I was very happy that I made the right choice.”
What has been the biggest adjustment from running in high school to college?
“The training in high school was not as intense. We only had practice in the morning. At UTSA, we have two-a-days. The mileage increases and you have to be ready mentally and physically. You have to work hard in practice to have a successful season. My senior year in high school was the first time running cross country. I still consider the sport new to me.”
How does the coaching differ between high school and college?
“The coaches here are able to offer more of a one-to-one relationship. The team is smaller, so the coaches are able to pay more attention to each member of the team.”
How do you like your teammates?
“I love them. They are a second family to me. We all get along. There is no competition or hostility between us. They are a major support group to me.”
What are your short-term and long-term goals as a team and individual?
“The short-term goal for the team would be to win the Southland conference title. Our long-term goal would be to make it to Nationals. As for me, I would love to break 18 minutes for the 5k by the end of my eligibility in cross country. I consider that to be both my short- term and long-term goal.”
What do you like to do when you are not running?
“I am always studying. Spending time with my family is a priority to me. I visit them in Austin when I have time. Also, I like spending time with my teammates.”
How are classes going this semester?
“I love how we have more free time in between classes. We are not in school all day but you do have to study more. Teachers expect more from you. In every one of my classes, I am able to join a study group or ask for assistance. As long as I keep up my study skills, classes are not as difficult. I really do not have a favorite class this semester. They are pretty much at the same level.”
