SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA men’s golf team turned in a final round 298 on Monday and finished in eighth place (896) at the Lone Star Invitational.
"I was pleased with how the guys played today," head coach John Knauer said. "It was important that we stay poised in our home event against a great field and I thought we did that. We were able to finish ahead of a ranked team in Rice, so that was important for the growth of our program. Overall, it was a great tournament and I want to thank everyone that helped out for making it a huge success."
Senior Emiliano Martinez finished in a 14th-place tie and was the Roadrunners' top finisher. The Laredo native turned in a final round 77 for a three-round total of 219. He recorded eight birdies during the two-day tournament.
Freshman Mitchell Griffin fired a 77 in the third round for a 223 tally and tied for 21st place in his first collegiate tournament. Griffin led UTSA with 12 birdies, including three in the final round.
Senior Ryan Kiel logged in a one-under-par round of 71 to cap off his tournament with a 227.
Meanwhile, juniors Jack Freeman and Lewis Chong also were in action and they ended their event with 229 and 242, respectively.
Defending National Champion Texas A&M collected the team title with rounds of 286-280-282 (848), while A&M's John Hurley won the individual crown by one stroke over Texas’ Dylan Frittelli.
UTSA returns to action on Oct. 26-27 at the Baylor Intercollegiate, which will be played in Dallas.
