UTSA in 13th place at Mercedes-Benz Championships

Sophomore Summer Batiste led UTSA with an opening-round 75 on Friday.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The UTSA women’s golf team is tied for 13th placewith Mississippi after shooting a first-round total of 309 on Friday at theMercedes-Benz Championships, which is being played at the Fox Den Country Club(6,317 yards/par 72).

“I’m very proud of how we played today,” head coach Carrie Cole said. “Wegot off to a rough start but really hung in there until the end. Theconditions were tough and the girls fought through them. This is asolid start to the tournament and we all feel there is room forimprovement tomorrow.”

Sophomore Summer Batiste led Roadrunners with an opening-round 75, which has her tied for 23rd place. The Spring native recordedtwo birdies on the day (Nos. 2 and 16).

Senior Madison McClain ended her round with a 76 (40-36) and is tied for31st place. The Missouri City native collected four birdies, includingtwo on the back nine.

Meanwhile, seniorShelly Martinez and sophomore Shannon Jungman both shot 79s and the pair is tied for63rd.

Tournament host Tennessee leads the event after firing a 283,while Kent State and Louisville are tied for second at 296. The Roadrunners concluded the day ahead of threeranked teams [#32 Furman (310); #19 Wake Forest (312); #35TCU (314)].

Second-round action will begin on Saturday morning.
