HOUSTON — Junior Chelsea Zimmerman’s goal with less than 10 minutes to play gave the UTSA soccer team a 1-0 win at Houston Baptist in non-conference action Friday afternoon.
“This was a hard-fought match, but we found a way to win,” head coach Steve Ballard said. “We wanted to see how the team would come out today after the last four matches. We beat a very good opponent, played hard and used our depth to get this win.”
The Roadrunners, who snapped their two-match losing streak, improved to 2-3 overall, while the Huskies dipped to 0-2 on the season.
Neither team found the net in the first half. However, the Huskies looked for the lead to start the second half, but freshman goalkeeper Dacia Webb, who posted her first career shutout, made back-to-back saves in the 53rd minute.
UTSA would then take the 1-0 advantage on Zimmerman’s first goal of the season at the 82-minute mark. Junior Laurel Dierking and sophomore Jodi Leroy were credited with assists.
Dierking, senior Halee Hamm and Zimmerman recorded three shots apiece, while Webb picked up her second win of the season and made fives saves on the day.
UTSA begins a four-match home stand on Friday, Sept. 11, against Utah State.
