UTSA women have successful weekend at Rice Classic

HOUSTON — The UTSA women’s tennis team gained 15 victories in 30 matches played last weekend at the Rice Classic.

In Flight 1 singles, sophomore Micaela Silva defeated Aleksandra Malyarchikova of SMU, 6-4, 6-2. Freshman Sarah Adams also was successful in her first-round match in Flight 3 against Marla Kalashnikova, 6-2, 6-1, and in her consolation contest against Liz Hamlin of Tulane (default).

Junior Caroline Dedering defeated Keri Frankenberger of LSU, 6-1, 6-3, in Flight 4 singles, while freshmen Vivian Carillo and Nicci Yvanovich and sophomore Katie Ottenbreit were all successful in their first round and consolation singles matches. Yvanovich also played an additional match on Sunday and she claimed victory in a back-and-forth battle with Mathis of LSU (0-6, 6-1, 12-10).

The Roadrunners collected four victories in doubles play, as Silva and Adams paired up in Flight 1 to down Kurdadze and Levy of Tulane in an 8-0 whitewashing. In Flight 2, Carillo and Dedering teamed up to defeat Briceno and Hatamova of SMU, 8-4. Ottenbreit paired with freshman Kavya Menon in Flight 3 to post an 8-1 triumph against Liu and Leyden of Texas. Menon redeemed her singles loss to Hilda Elster of Tulane while teamed with Ottenbreit to outlast Elster and Helisten in a 5-4 (retired) decision.

The Roadrunners will take a two-week break before returning to fall play in Waco at the ITA Invitational beginning on Oct. 16.
