HOUSTON — The UTSA soccer team snapped its two-match losing streak with a 6-1 win at Texas Southern at Durley Field in non-conference action Friday afternoon.
The Roadrunners improve to 4-6 on the season, while the Lady Tigers dropped to 1-7 on the year.
UTSA took the early lead on back-to-back goals by senior Jenny Munozand sophomore Taylor Padia in the first half. Sophomore Jenna Paweleksent a cross into the box to a wide open Munoz, who knocked it in pastthe diving Texas Southern’s goalie at 27:01 in the frame. Padia thennetted her first goal of the season off a free kick from 20 yards out aminute later.
The Roadrunners added their third goal of thestanza when freshman Ally Brosius connected on a header off the cornerkick from senior Kari Weilend at the 39th minute mark.
UTSA added three goals in the second half beginning with a miscue by Texas Southern at the 65th minute mark and then pushed its lead 5-0 when sophomore Katie Dugan knocked it in three minutes later. Freshman Lindsay South increased the Roadrunners lead 6-0 when she was good on a penalty kick at the 70-minute mark.
Texas Southern got on the board when Ashley Garcia beat the Birds’ goalkeeper to make the score 6-1 with less than six minutes to play.
Junior Chelsea Zimmerman led UTSA’s with five shots, while Padia and South added four attempts. Pawelek and Weiland added an assist apiece.
UTSA returns to action Sunday afternoon against Prairie View A&M at 1 p.m.
