Senior Dana Mecke won her third consecutive Ricardo Romo/Six Flags Fiesta Texas Classic title on Friday night .
SAN ANTONIO — Senior Dana Mecke won the women’s title for the third straight year and sophomore Cole Reveal was the top collegiate male, as the UTSA cross country teams swept the Ricardo Romo/Six Flags Fiesta Texas Classic team titles in dominating fashion Friday evening at Brooks City-Base.
Mecke, the two-time defending champion, edged sophomore teammate Kayla Pratt at the finish line in winning her third race of the season and 11th of her career. The reigning Southland Conference Champion covered the 5k course in a time of 18:23.0, with Pratt right next to her in 18:23.3.
Freshman Ashley Benes was fourth overall in 19:06.7, while freshman Jessica Bitterly, senior Pernilla Savestrand and sophomore Courtney Nelson finished sixth (19:22.4), seventh (19:31.9) and eighth (19:40.8), respectively.
The Roadrunners tallied 20 points for an easy win in the seven-team field. Georgia College & State University was second with 59 points, followed by St. Mary’s (95), Texas A&M International (107), Texas A&M-Kingsville (110), Lon Morris College (135) and Our Lady of the Lake (139).
Reveal led an equally-impressive performance by the UTSA men, clocking a 5k time of 15:23.1 to finish second overall behind unattached Donovan Torres’ winning time of 15:13.9. The Frisco native was one of eight Roadrunners in the top 11 finishers, as UTSA scored 19 points for a convincing win ahead of Texas A&M-Kingsville (83), Georgia College & State University (90), Texas A&M International (94), Lon Morris College (119), Huston-Tillotson (185) and Schreiner (200).
Freshman Jim Stitt was the second Roadrunner to cross, placing fourth overall with a 15:33.9 effort. Sophomore Brandon Chiuminetta was right behind in fifth with a 15:34.1 clocking, while sophomore Layne Nixon was sixth in 15:38.4. Sophomore Albert Cardenas rounded out the top five scorers with a seventh-place time of 15:49.9. Senior Corey Vargas, sophomore Michael Cook and redshirt freshman Daniel Balbontin also made the top 11, finishing eighth (15:52.5), ninth (15:53.4) and 11th (15:58.3), respectively.
The Roadrunners return to action next weekend with split squads competing at the Islander Splash on Friday, Sept. 25, and the Stanford Invitational one day later.
