HONOLULU, Hawai`i — Outside hitter Kendra Rowland posted a double-double (11 kills/11 digs) and UTSA ended its stay on the Hawaiian Islands with a 25-22, 25-21, 20-25, 27-25 victory against Weber State on Saturday night at The Honolulu Advertiser Challenge.
The Roadrunners (4-7), who won the first two sets, held off a late charge by the Wildcats for their first win in five all-time meetings between the two programs.
Rowland, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, registered her fifth double-double of the season and 39th of her three-year career. Meanwhile, outside hitter Whitney Walls added 10 winners, as UTSA hit .279 on the night.
The Birds were just as effective at the service line, as they racked up a season-best 13 aces. Libero Kelsey Jewasko led the charge with a career-high five, while setter Amber Brooks and defensive specialist Megan Schauffele added three apiece.
Weber State (1-9) was led by Chelsea Bair and Jenna Leggat, who both slammed home 16 kills. The Wildcats hit .314 as a team but were done in by multiple unforced errors, including 15 service errors.
The Roadrunner returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 17, when they host No. 3 Washington (8-0) in the opening match of the UTSA Classic. First serve is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the Convocation Center and it will mark the fourth Top 25 opponent UTSA has faced in a two-week span.
