HONOLULU, Hawai`i — No. 10 Stanford committed just one error on its 74 attacks on Thursday night and the Cardinal swept UTSA by scores of 25-17, 25-11 and 25-9 in the opening match of The Honolulu Advertiser Challenge.
Janet Okogbaa led a nearly-flawless offensive performance with 16 kills on her 19 swings and Stanford (4-2) racked up 42 winners on its way to a .554 team hitting percentage in the one-hour, four-minute match. Alix Klineman and Cassidy Lichtman each added seven kills.
The Cardinal hit .500 in the first set and recored its lone attack error a little more than halfway through the eight-point victory. Stanford did not commit a miscue the rest of the way, combining for 26 winners on 44 swings in the final two frames.
The Roadrunners (3-6) were led by outside hitter Kendra Rowland and middle hitter Briana Mason, both of whom registered seven kills. Rowland paced UTSA defensively with nine digs.
The Birds continue tournament play on Friday night locally when it takes on sixth-ranked Hawai`i (4-2). The match is slated to begin at midnight (CT) on Saturday morning.
