Heavy rains cause cancellation of Texas A&M Invitational

COLLEGE STATION – Due to heavy rains in the Bryan/College Station area the past couple of days and another deluge Friday evening, the Texas A&M Invitational has been cancelled due to unsuitable course conditions.

According to the Texas A&M Athletics Department in a release issued Friday evening, all measures were taken to try to keep the cross country meet on schedule. Even a revised course was established for weather-affected areas during Friday afternoon. However, with more heavy rains throughout Friday evening, the course became unsuitable to compete on.

This marks the second consecutive year the Texas A&M Invitational has been cancelled, with last year's event not held due to Hurricane Ike.

The Roadrunners return home to host the Ricardo Romo/Six Flags Fiesta Texas Classic next Friday, Sept. 18, at Brooks City-Base.

SAN ANTONIO —
The UTSA men’s and women’s cross country teams will return to action on Saturday when they travel to College Station to compete in the Texas A&M Invitational.

The men’s 8,000-meter run is slated for a 7:45 a.m. start, followed by the women’s 5k at 8:30 a.m. in what will be the first traditional meet for the Roadrunners.

UTSA will compete against teams from Baylor, Houston, Houston Baptist, LSU, Lubbock Christian (men), Monterrey Tech (men), Prairie View A&M, Rice (women), Sam Houston State, SMU (women), Texas-Pan American, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas State, and Wayland Baptist.

UTSA is coming off a pair of solid showings in the first week of competition. The Roadrunners swept the team titles at the Trinity Opener on Sept. 1, with the women tallying a near-perfect score of 16 behind five runners in the top six. The men edged Trinity, 28-30, on the strength of a third-place showing from sophomore Cole Reveal.

At the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Relays last Friday, sophomore Kayla Pratt and freshman Jessica Bitterly teamed up to defeat a field of 12 relay tandems, including runners from the host Islanders and Stephen F. Austin, the top two teams at last season’s Southland Conference Championships. The sophomore duo of Layne Nixon and Albert Cardenas were the top UTSA finishers in the men’s race, taking second overall.

Last year’s Texas A&M Invitational was cancelled due to Hurricane Ike.
