Men's golf to open fall season this weekend

Season Opener: UTSA men’s golf team begins fall play this weekend at William H. Tucker Intercollegiate. The event starts on Friday with 36 holes and ends Saturday with the final 18 holes.

Where: University of New Mexico Championship Course (7,591yards/par 72) — Albuquerque, N.M.

When: Friday, Sept. 11 — Saturday, Sept. 12

Tournament Field: Air Force, Arizona, Baylor, BYU, Campbell, Colorado, New Mexico, New Mexico State, North Texas, Pepperdine, San Diego State, Texas A&M, Utah, UNLV, UTEP, UTSA and Wyoming.

Payne Wilkie (So. – Austin, Texas)
· Appeared in 11 tournaments last season
· Recorded an 77.39 overall stroke average
 
Ryan Kiel (Sr. – Seguin, Texas)
· Played in five tournaments in 2009
· Posted the second-best team stroke average with a 75.40

Lewis Chong (Jr. – Lethbridge, Alberta)
· Competed in 11 events last year
· Had the third best stroke average on the team (76.58)

Jack Freeman (Jr. – Garland, Texas)
· Redshirted the 2008-09 season

Emiliano Martinez (Sr. – Laredo, Texas)
· Posted a 76.94 overall stroke average
· Played in all 11 tournaments last season

Last Season: In John Knauer’s first season as UTSA men’s golf coach, he guided his team to four top-10 finishes, including a fourth place showing at the Southland Conference Championship.
