Davis inks free agent deal with New York Mets

Senior Marshal Davis is the third player from the 2009 squad to join the professional ranks this summer.

SAN ANTONIO ? Senior Marshal Davis became the third Roadrunner from last spring's squad to join the professional ranks, as he agreed to terms on a free agent deal with the New York Mets this weekend. The Conroe native is en route to Florida and will be assigned to one of the Mets' minor league affiliates later this week.

A four-year letterwinner and three-year starter at shortstop, Davis had arguably his best season in navy blue and orange this past season. He hit .314 (72-for-229) with nine doubles, a half dozen triples (t-No. 3 on UTSA's single-season list), two home runs and 41 RBIs ? all of which were career highs ? and he earned honorable mention All-Southland Conference accolades. He added 42 runs scored, walked 35 times and reached base at a .401 clip.

Davis was even better in league action, recording a .336 batting averagewith eight doubles, four triples, a homer, 24 RBIs and 30 walks.

He is one of just three players that have been team captains for more than one season during the nine-year tenure of head coach Sherman Corbett.

Fellow seniors Michael Rockett (13th round/Detroit Tigers) and Jose Hernandez (23rd round/Pittsburgh Pirates) both were selected in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft earlier this month.

Corbett now has coached 22 players that have moved on to professional careers.
