SAN ANTONIO ? Junior Jessica Jones will represent the UTSA women’s track and field team for the second straight season in the 100-meter hurdles at the NCAA Midwest Regional this Friday-Saturday, May 29-30, in Norman, Okla.
Jones, a two-time Southland Conference champion in the event, will race in the preliminary round at 4:40 p.m. on Friday in lane seven of the third and final heat. The winner of each heat plus the next five fastest times will advance to Saturday’s final scheduled for 5:45 p.m.
The Fort Bend Hightower product enters the 24-person field with the 12th-fastest time, a personal-best 13.63 she clocked in winning her second consecutive conference crown on May 10 in Nacogdoches, Texas. She met the regional-qualifying standard of 13.92 twice and also won the UTEP Invitational and Rice Twilight during the outdoor campaign. Jones also raced to gold in the 60m hurdles with a career-best 8.48 at the SLC Indoor Championships in February.
Last year, Jones stopped the clock in 14.06 to place 18th overall at the regional meet.
The top five finishers in the event will earn automatic bids to this year’sNCAA Outdoor Championships, which is scheduled for June 10-13 in Fayetteville, Ark.
The Midwest Regional is one of four regional meetscontested this weekend to help determine the national field.Student-athletes from institutions located in the states of Colorado,Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota,Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas and Wyoming.
