Sophomore Aimee Jonas scored four-and-a-half points on Saturday.

NACOGDOCHES ? Sophomore Aimee Jonas andfreshman Courtney Nelson combined forthree top-eight finishes to highlight day two action for the UTSA women’strack & field team at the Southland Conference Outdoor Championshipsheld Saturday at Homer Bryce Stadium.

Jonas tallied 4,537 points for a sixth-place finish in the heptathlonand also cleared 5-3 ? to tie for seventh place in the high jump,scoring 4.5 points for the Roadrunners. The La Vernia native enteredthe second day of the combined event competition in seventh place andmade up one spot in a tightly-contested field of 15 athletes. Sheleaped to a 17-0 mark in the long jump, measured 89-2 in the javelinand clocked a 2:30.09 in the 800 meters to round out the seven-eventcompetition. Jonas was just 25 points behind Stephen F. Austin’s MeganHarlan (4,562) for fifth. Valerie Hancock won the heptathlon with 4,839points.

Meanwhile, Nelson posted a sixth-place performance in the final eventof the evening, the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The Reagan High productcompleted the seven and one-half lap race in a personal-best time of11:54.79 to contribute three more points to the team score.

In preliminary-round action on the track, a pair of Roadrunners advanced to Sunday’s finals.

Junior Jessica Jones will attempt to defend her conference title in the100m hurdles as she won her preliminary heat in 14.11, which marked thethird-fastest time of the afternoon. The Hightower High product racedto a 13.76 to secure last year’s crown and also won the 60m hurdles atthis year’s SLC Indoor Championships.

Sophomore Jayde James won her preliminary heat in the 800m with a2:17.53 clocking and will head to Sunday’s 12-person final with thethird-fastest qualifying time.

UTSA has scored 7.5 points through eight events and stands ninth in theteam standings. Stephen F. Austin has tallied 87.5 points to lead allteams, while Texas State (54.5) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (43)round out the top three.

The meet concludes on Sunday.
