HOUSTON ? The UTSA men's track & field team picked up seven top-three finishes on Wednesday at the Rice Twilight in its final tuneup for next weekend's Southland Conference Outdoor Championships.
Leading the way was sophomore John Matthews, who placed second in both the 200 meters and 110m hurdles with personal best times. The Baytown native opened his day with a 14.77 clocking in the high hurdles, which was just nine one-hundredths of a second behind Sam Houston State's John Thomas. An hour later, he crossed the tape in 21.62, giving him the top deuce mark among collegiate competitiors.
Meanwhile, the Roadrunners had the top two collegians in the 800m when sophomore Bryan Ugochukwu and freshman Michael Cook recorded season-best times. Ugochukwu raced to a 1:51.86 en route to a second-place performance, while Cook was less than two seconds behind in third with his 1:53.58 clocking.
Freshman Layne Nixon was runner-up in the 5k with his top collegaite mark of 15:12.91 and sophomore Brandon Chiuminetta was third in the 1,500m with his time of 3:59.57.
Senior Carvey Evans was the squad's other silver medal performer with his 6-8 3/4 (2.05m) cleareance in the high jump.
UTSA will begin defense of its SLC Outdoor Championship next weekend (May 8-10) in Nacogdoches.
