Jones, Nelson highlight UTSA effort at Rice Twilight


Freshman Courtney Nelson was victorious in the 3,000m steeplechase on Wednesday evening.

HOUSTON ? Junior Jessica Jones and freshman Courtney Nelson posted victories to highlight action for the UTSA women’s track & field team on Wednesday evening at the J. Fred Duckett Rice Twilight held at Rice Track Stadium.

In the final tune-up for the Southland Conference Championships set for next weekend, Jones breezed to a 14.14 clocking to win the 100-meter hurdles. The conference leader at 13.74 finished ahead of a pair of league foes in Sam Houston State’s Tywaneisha Spiller (14.21) and Stephen F. Austin’s Silent-Joy Egboba-Waye (14.23).

Nelson went under 12 minutes in an easy victory in the 3,000m steeplechase. The Reagan High product finished the grueling, seven and a half lap barrier race in a personal-best 11:57.35 to better her previous record of 12:03.66 posted at the Texas Twilight on April 18.

Sophomore Jayde James shaved nearly six seconds off her season-best in the 800m, clocking a 2:13.75 to place fourth behind a trio of Rice runners.

Meanwhile, freshman Kayla Pratt knocked 10 seconds off her season-best in the 1,500m as she stopped the clock in 4:49.11 for ninth.

In other action, senior Shanelle Slaughter leaped to an 18-3 ? measure to finish sixth in the long jump, while sophomore Kayla Thomas was seventh with an 18-0 ? effort. Sophomore Rebekah Hill broke the sand at 17-6 ? for 10th and skipped to a 38-5 mark for third in the triple jump.

The Roadrunners return to the track next Friday-Sunday, May 8-10, when they travel to Nacogdoches for the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships.
