Collins tied for third after day one action of SLC Championship

KERRVILLE ? Senior Kyle Collins sits in a two-way tie for third place with a one-under par score (71) to lead the UTSA men’s golf team to a fifth place showing after day one completion of the 2009 Southland Conference Men’s Golf Championship held at the Comanche Trace Golf Course (par 72/7,304 yards).

“I am very pleased with the way we competed to start the tournament, despite the horrible conditions of rain and wind,” first-year coach John Knauer said. “We began the day with the easy holes and had the lead at one point, but then we moved on to the tougher holes and that’s were I thought we gave some holes away. Overall, we are still within striking distance with two more rounds to play. Kyle had great round today and to be in position for the individual title is good for him to end his career.”

The San Antonio native turned in a 35 at the front nine and then a 36 at the back end of the course to go along with three birdies on the day. Junior Emiliano Martinez carded a 75 in first round action and is tied for 19th place the championship.  Meanwhile, junior Ryan Kiel and Lewis Chong posted a 76 apiece and are tied for 27th place.

UT Arlington leads the field in the team standing with an day one total of 284 (-4), while Zach Fisher of UTA posted a 67 to take a four stroke advantage over Collins and Lamar’s Justin Harding.
