SAN ANTONIO ? Sophomore Emily Humpal slugged a two-run home run and earned the win in the circle to lead UTSA to a 3-1 victory over Cal State Bakersfield in game one of a non-conference doubleheader held Saturday afternoon at Roadrunner Field. Kristen Archuleta went 3-for-4 to help CSUB rally for a 3-1 victory in the nightcap.

Humpal went 2-for-3 at the plate with her second long ball of the season to lead the Roadrunners (23-22) offense in the opener. The Corpus Christi native fanned three and scattered five hits to run her record to 12-10 on the year.

Freshman Caitlyn Ivy also collected a pair of hits for UTSA, while juniors Chelsey Chapman and Cassie Miller, sophomore Kristin Kappler and freshman Amber Anderson posted one hit apiece in the first-ever meeting between the only two NCAA Division I schools with the nickname Roadrunners.

After three scoreless frames, CSUB threatened in the top of the fourth. A single, an error and a walk loaded the bases with two down for Archuleta. She lined a 2-2 offering into the gap in right center field, but the UTSA right fielder Chapman ran the ball down for a nice running catch just short of the fence to save at least two runs.

Humpal helped UTSA get on the board in the bottom of the frame. Ivy led off with a base hit up the middle and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior Krista Sitka. Humpal then drilled a 1-0 pitch from CSUB starter Brittany Johnson on top of the hitting facility beyond the left field fence to put UTSA on top, 2-0. Kappler then doubled to right center and freshman pinch runner Laura Little scored on a Chapman ground ball that just went past the outstretched glove of second baseman Archuleta.

CSUB picked up an unearned run in the sixth as Jaimey Kleinsmith singled and pinch runner Chelsey Bell stole second and scored on a UTSA throwing error with two down.

Humpal stranded Jill McClelland, who doubled with two down in the seventh, to secure the win for UTSA.

Johnson (10-10) took the loss, allowing three runs on eight hits.

In the nightcap, Little gave UTSA a 1-0 lead with a solo home run with one out in the bottom of the third. It was the first career round-tripper for the Spring native.

Meanwhile, sophomore left-hander Danye Holmes and the UTSA defense worked out of numerous jams in the first six frames as CSUB stranded eight base runners, including six in scoring position.

The visitors finally broke through in their final chance to force extra innings. Johnson got things going with a pinch-hit bloop single to right field to lead off the seventh. Kelli Bailey then rolled a slow dribbler up the middle of the infield to put runners at first and third with nobody out. After a popup, Justeen Maeva executed a suicide squeeze bunt to plate pinch runner Nette Puente from third with the tying run.

CSUB took its first lead of the afternoon in the first extra frame. Stefanie Frei reached on a throwing error and moved to third on a single to center by Archuleta. Heather Veitch then lined a double down the right field line to push both runners home and give the Roadrunners a 3-1 lead.

Right-hander Shawna Truan (9-7) worked a 1-2-3 eighth to earn the win and the split for CSUB. She struck out seven and surrendered just one run on five hits in the complete-game victory.

Bell and McClelland joined Archuleta with multiple hits, collecting two apiece for CSUB, while Veitch led all players with a pair of RBIs on the game-winning two-bagger.

Holmes (9-9) took the loss for UTSA, allowing two earned runs on 10 hits in eight panels. Ivy led the Roadrunners at the plate with a pair of base knocks, while Anderson, Chapman and Little registered a hit each.

Game three is slated for noon Sunday.
