| Junior Teddy Williams qualified for next month's NCAA Midwest Regional in his first 200 meters race of the year on Saturday. |
AUSTIN ? NCAA Regional qualifying marks by senior Gaston Griffin in the 400 meters, junior Teddy Williams in the 200m and the 400m relay squad highlighted Saturday's action at the Texas Twilight by the UTSA men's track & field team.
Griffin circled the Mike A. Myers Stadium track in a season-best 47.03, the second-fastest time of his career, and that was good for third place overall and second among collegiate competitors.
Meanwhile, Williams, who currently holds the world's fastest 100m time (9.90w/set a week ago at the UTEP Invitational), sped to a regional-qualifying 20.99 in his first deuce race of the season. His time was good for third overall, just two one-hundredths of a second behind winner Obadele Thompson, and tops among collegians.
Earlier in the day, Williams teamed up with sophomores Kevin Hunt and John Matthews and freshman Eman Fondren to clock the fifth-fastest 400m relay time in school history in the second track event of the afternoon. The quartet passed the baton in an NCAA Regional 40.15, which was second only to the attached foursome of Thompson, Brendan Christian, Aaron Armstrong and Carey Lacoure (39.56). It is the second-best time in the Southland Conference this spring.
Other performances of note included freshman Michael Cook improving his league-leading 1,500m time of 3:56.29 set two weeks ago at the Texas Relays to 3:54.79 in a fifth-place finish. Fellow frosh Cole Reveal was right behind his teammate in sixth with his 3:55.52 and that mark currently ranks second in the circuit.
Senior Tommy Wolfe also had a solid day, finishing second in the javelin and fifth in the pole vault in addition to winning his section of the discus. Wolfe opened his afternoon with a 138-9 (42.31m) toss in the discus. The Raymondville native then broke his school record in the pole vault and moved to the top of the conference leaderboard with his 16-2 ? (4.95m) clearance. He finished off the day with a throw of 192-1 (58.54m) in the javelin.
Meanwhile, senior Carvey Evans cleared 6-8 ? (2.05m) to place second in the high jump and freshman Geulien Brisco picked up a bronze medal in the long jump following his leap of 23-4 (7.11m).
UTSA will be back in action at a pair of meets next weekend (Penn Relays & Rice Twilight).
